Jody and Janie left, and arrived in Florida, when they arrive there he introduces himself to Lee Coker, and Amos Hicks to ask for the governor. Jody becomes very popular, and builds a store for the town; everyone tends to love him. He is then announced mayor sense there isn't a mayor to run the town. Janie then grows apart because she just becomes known as the "mayors wife", and has to watch over the store. Their sexual attraction grows apart, and people wonder how she deals with him. Many people come to the store while she is working and just like to talk with her. Many make fun of Matt Bonner and his mule. One day Joe and Janie get in a big fight at the store in front of a group of people. She calls him out on being no fun and people say they would never let a woman embarrass her.
