When they were on the walk, she finally told him his name. They had small talk and laughed. There was silence at times but it was awkward for the either of them. Will would study her at the little things he did, and he caught himself imagining to be with her longer, walking on the beach in the future. That night he slept by the turtles and she finally slept in her bed, in the morning Jonah went outsides talking to him asking who he was and such. And then he brought up the carnival and how Will was the one who told her dad where Ronnie was the night the cops brought her home from Bowers Point. Ronnie was furious, she couldn't believe he would do such a thing. But he begged for forgiveness and told her he wanted to take her somewhere. They went to the aquarium, where he was a volunteer worker, and he showed her what the normal public doesn't see. Endagered and beaten up sea turtles, she was amazed by them. She loved it. She forgot about what happened earlier and had a good day with him. They went fishing and had lunch, until she went to his volleyball game. While he was playing, his ex girlfriend, Ashely came and sat next to her and told her a bunch of stuff to get in her head. She acted as if taking her fishing and the aquarium was a ritual for everyone, and like he was with plenty of other girls. Ronnie got so frustrated that she'd been so "stupid" to fall for it, she left the game and went home. Her dad followed her inside and saw her packing, he asked what was wrong and she told him she wanted to go home, and he said he would let her but he doesn't know if he could because of the shoplifting event. They heard a pounding on the door and she already knew it was was, Will. She opened the door and then slammed it in his face. She hugged her dad and tears fell down her face as they started making dinner, she realized she missed him.

Tea Cake and Janie are completely in love and can't stand a moment without each other. While she works in the kitchen, he works picking beans. He plays music in his spare time, and his house becomes a social area where everyone gathers. Janie eventually starts working wit him on the field, so they're together all day.

Janie did what she said and she left Eatonville to go marry Tea Cake. Still being cautious though of what everyone was saying about Tea Cake ripping her off, she doesn't tell him about the 200 dollars she has inside her shirt. One morning when she woke up to find Tea Cake not there and her money missing. She got nervous, until he came back and said he bought food and had music with a bunch of people. He didn't invite her, which she was irritated about but she always told him to invite her next time, no matter who's there. Because he took her money, he promises her to pay him back, so he goes gambling and wins 320 dollars, but while in the act of that he gets beaten up. This shows that Tea Cake is trust worthy and she tells him about the rest of her money in the bank, but he says she'll never have to use it, then they go to the Everglades.

This chapter was really short. It showed that Janie wasn't going to listen to anyone and she was going to follow her heart. After the picnic everyone was gossiping how Tea Cake was going to use Janie for her money but she told them he treated her greatly and she was going to sell the store and marry Tea Cake. Her best friend Phoeby even tried conviencing her but she didn't listen to her.

Tea Cake didn't come back for about a week but when he did he was the same as before, flirting and playing checkers with Janie. He asks her to go fishing, and so they spend the night on the lake but she has to sneak him out sense it hasn't been that long sense Joe died and she doesn't want to have gossip. They talk about their feelings and she only likes him as a friend, but he tells her different. She can't believe he would like her though because she is must older but she is scared that he would take advantage of her like people say. They think that he isn't good enough of her. He has to go to work, but the next morning he wants to let her know that what he said about his feelings are real. He buys a car and invites her to a picnic with him to make their relationship public.

Janie has a six month period of mourning of Jody's death, she is still running the store. She feels free and loves not being tied down, nor does she want to be tied to another man. She keeps her hair down in a long braid now that Jody has passed away. Men try to flirt with her but it doesn't work. One day a man came into the store and bought cigarettes and started having small talk and flirting with her. Unlike the others, this worked. He taught her to play checkers, while everyone was out at a game. When it was time to close the store up, he helped her and walked her home, his name was Tea Cake.

Janie notices Jody beginning to become old, and he realizes it too, so to make himself feel better he bashes her at the store in front of a big crowd of people. He ends up hitting her, and at this point she thought of running away. Soon after him hitting her, he becomes more ill and doesn't even stay in thes ame room as Janie. He is diagnosed with Kidney failure, but because it was caught too late there is no way to fix it. He gets mad and tries to blame her for things, in the midst of it he dies. She lets her long black hair down soon after to realize she is free but has to tie it back up to show mourning of his death.
